What is Animal Acupuncture?
Acupuncture has been practiced on humans in China for more than 4,500 years. The first use of acupuncture on animals can be traced to the western Jin dynasty period of China from 136 to 265 A.D. In this early form, sharp stones were used to cut and bleed specific locations on horses and other large working animals.
Acupuncture also stimulates the release of certain neurotransmitters like endorphins, the body's natural pain-killers, and smaller amounts of cortical, an anti-inflammatory steroid.
Acupuncture is indicated mainly for functional problems such as those that involve paralysis, noninfectious inflammation (such as allergies), and pain for dogs, cats and other domestic animals. (read more)
What are Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture?
TCM is a holistic method of treatment which uses acupuncture and herbs to strengthen and promote health. Chinese medicine is based on the concept of Qi (vital energy) which flows along pathways in the body called meridians and is stored in major organs. When the Qi flows freely, the body is healthy and pain free. When the Qi is disrupted, then the body may manifest pain or disease. This disruption can be due to many things, such as injury, surgery, bad diet, toxins, and old age.
Acupuncture can help the body to heal itself by effecting physiological changes such as increasing blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulating the central nervous system, which releases hormones such as endorphins to help eliminate pain.
There are points along each meridian where the Qi can be stimulated, which regulates the functioning of the organs and brings the body back into balance. Acupuncture can not only treat diseases, but can strengthen one's immune system to prevent disease and promote health.
Chinese herbal formulas combine plant, mineral and animal substances to promote and prolong the treatment between acupuncture visits. (read more)
